Small magnitude 3.5 earthquake 16 miles northwest of Shreveport, Louisiana, United States A very shallow magnitude 3.5 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Shreveport, Caddo County, Louisiana, USA. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Saturday, January 18th, 2025, at 2:12 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mooringsport (pop. 790) located 1 miles from the epicenter, and Blanchard (pop. 2,900) 7 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Benton (pop. 2,000) located 13 miles from the epicenter, Greenwood (pop. 3,200) 16 miles away, Shreveport (pop. 197,200) 16 miles away, Bossier City (pop. 68,100) 17 miles away, Red Chute (pop. 6,300) 22 miles away, and Marshall (pop. 23,800) 25 miles away. In Longview (pop. 82,300, 47 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
