Small 2.8 quake hits near Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia An earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred only 16 minutes ago 29 miles south of Canberra, New South Wales, Australia, Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia, late at night on Saturday, January 18th, 2025, at 11:01 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 2.8 earthquake as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Michelago (pop. 540) located 3 miles from the epicenter. In Calwell (pop. 5,600, 18 miles away), Kambah (pop. 14,500, 22 miles away), Queanbeyan (pop. 6,300, 25 miles away), Canberra (pop. 367,800, 29 miles away), Ainslie (pop. 5,100, 31 miles away), Bruce (pop. 7,300, 32 miles away), Belconnen (pop. 6,600, 32 miles away), and Cooma (pop. 6,600, 37 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
