Small magnitude 3.4 quake hits 26 km northwest of Drama, Greece in the evening A very shallow magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported in the evening near Drama, Dráma, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Friday, January 17th, 2025, at 9:24 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 3.5, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.5, and The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Volakas (pop. 1,200) located 8 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Prosotsani (pop. 4,000) located 15 km from the epicenter, Petroussa (pop. 2,000) 15 km away, Drama (pop. 44,800) 26 km away, Gotse Delchev (pop. 20,500) 32 km away, and Serres (pop. 58,300) 39 km away. In Neapolis (pop. 54,000, 59 km away), Petrich (pop. 30,700, 59 km away), and Sandanski (pop. 26,500, 59 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
