Magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes near Oia, Cyclades, South Aegean, Greece The National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Greece near Oia, Cyclades, South Aegean, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Saturday, February 8th, 2025, at 11:00 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.8, the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 4.7, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.0, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Arkesini (pop. 110) located 24 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Fira (pop. 2,400) located 34 km from the epicenter, Messaria (pop. 1,200) 34 km away, Oia (pop. 3,400) 36 km away, Emporeio (pop. 1,900) 37 km away, Ios (pop. 2,000) 45 km away, Naxos (pop. 7,100) 68 km away, and Paros (pop. 5,300) 78 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
