Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes near Oia, Cyclades, South Aegean, Greece An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 8 minutes ago 17 km northeast of Oia, Greece, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Oia, Cyclades, South Aegean, Greece, in the morning on Friday, February 7th, 2025, at 9:16 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well. A third agency, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Monolithos (pop. 180) located 15 km from the epicenter, Fira (pop. 2,400) 16 km away, Oia (pop. 3,400) 17 km away, Messaria (pop. 1,200) 18 km away, Emporeio (pop. 1,900) 22 km away, and Ios (pop. 2,000) 31 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Naxos (pop. 7,100) located 65 km from the epicenter, and Paros (pop. 5,300) 70 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
