Moderate magnitude 4.7 earthquake 17 km southeast of Tandag, Philippines An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred only 11 minutes ago 17 km southeast of Tandag, Philippines, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 29. km beneath the epicenter near Tandag, Surigao del Sur, Caraga, Philippines, in the afternoon on Sunday, March 9th, 2025, at 5:46 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bislig (pop. 67,600) located 80 km from the epicenter, Libertad (pop. 250,400) 82 km away, and Buenavista (pop. 68,900) 93 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
