Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.7 just reported 50 km southeast of Tandag, Philippines Just 13 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Tandag, Surigao del Sur, Caraga, Philippines. The tremor was recorded early morning on Sunday, March 16th, 2025, at 3:50 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface. The event was filed by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Marihatag (pop. 3,800) located 22 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Tandag (pop. 29,000) located 50 km from the epicenter, Bislig (pop. 67,600) 60 km away, San Francisco (pop. 18,500) 62 km away, Bah-Bah (pop. 28,600) 64 km away, Bayugan (pop. 40,600) 78 km away, Talacogon (pop. 15,600) 82 km away, and Bunawan (pop. 15,500) 83 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Butuan (pop. 309,700) located 106 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
