Extensive flooding of the Midwest and Southeast U.S. is shown in this false-color corrected reflectance (Bands 7-2-1) image captured on April 10, 2025, by the Moderate Resolution Image Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra platform. Overlaid on the false-color image are flooded areas shown in red. The Flood (3-Day Window) layer is created from data acquired by MODIS aboard both the Terra and Aqua platforms and requires three water detections over three days to mark an area as having a flood.
Press the play button in the lower left corner to view an animation of the slow-moving storm system inundating the area with rain. Some areas experienced 10-15 inches (25-38 centimeters) of rainfall between April 1 and 6. Heavy rainfall is shown in shades of orange and red.
The left image (A side) is a corrected reflectance (Bands 7-2-1) image from Terra/MODIS, which shows flooded areas in shades of blue. The right image (B side) uses the same band combinations as the left image with the addition of the Flood (3-Day Window) layer, which shows flooded areas in red. Swipe the center bar back and forth to see how the blue floodwaters correspond to the flood highlighted in red by the Flood (3-Day Window) layer.
