Moderate tremor of magnitude 4.3 just reported 15 miles southeast of Challis, Idaho, United States A very shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported in the morning near Challis, Custer County, Idaho, USA. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Sunday, June 8th, 2025, at 11:05 am local time at a very shallow depth of 2.3 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.3. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Challis (pop. 1000) located 15 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sun Valley (pop. 1,400) located 43 miles from the epicenter, Ketchum (pop. 2,700) 45 miles away, Hailey (pop. 8,100) 55 miles away, Hailey (pop. 8,100) 55 miles away, Bellevue (pop. 2,300) 58 miles away, and Salmon (pop. 3,000) 61 miles away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
