Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.4 quake hits 133 km northwest of Finschhafen, Papua New Guinea around noon

An intermediate to deep magnitude 5.4 earthquake was reported around noon near Finschhafen, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.
According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Saturday, June 7th, 2025, at 12:51 pm local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 161. km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.5, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.5.
