Small magnitude 3.1 quake hits 6 km southeast of Klerksdorp, South Africa early morning An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred only 21 minutes ago 6 km southeast of Klerksdorp, South Africa, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Klerksdorp, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, North West, South Africa, early morning on Thursday, June 26th, 2025, at 6:21 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Umzimhle (pop. 7,400) located 5 km from the epicenter, Klerksdorp (pop. 227,000) 6 km away, Stilfontein (pop. 93,100) 9 km away, and Orkney (pop. 110,100) 10 km away. In Hartbeesfontein (pop. 22,300, 32 km away), Viljoenskroon (pop. 55,000, 42 km away), and Potchefstroom (pop. 178,300, 44 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
