Wildfires broke out on the Greek island of Chios on Sunday, June 22, 2025, in the areas of Kofinas, Agia Anna, Agios Makarios, and Agios Markos, and on Monday, in Agiasmata. The fires damaged homes, crops, and infrastructure on the island.
The images above were captured by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the joint NASA/NOAA NOAA-21 platform on June 23, 2025. The left "A" image is a true-color corrected reflectance image overlaid with the Fires and Thermal Anomalies layer. The right "B" image is a false-color (Bands M11-I2-I1) corrected reflectance image showing the actively burning fire fronts and burn scars. Swipe the center bar left and right to view the images.
Press the "Play" button in the lower left corner of the map above to see the spread of the fires from June 22 - 24, 2025. The fires burned over 11,000 acres of forest on the island and caused the evacuation of more than a dozen villages, with more than 400 firefighters battling the blazes.
Chios is known for its resin-producing mastic trees, which are used in pharmaceuticals, beauty products, and liquor. Mastic trees are not grown in many other places in the world and are therefore important for the local economy as well as bringing tourism to the island. In 2012, a wildfire burned more than half of the mastic trees, which prompted a global shortage of resin.
