Small tremor of magnitude 3.6 just reported 39 miles southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico, United States A magnitude 3.6 earthquake near Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, USA, was reported only 16 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles beneath the epicenter early morning on Tuesday, July 15th, 2025, at 2:59 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Malaga (pop. 150) located 24 miles from the epicenter, Loving (pop. 1,400) 27 miles away, and Jal (pop. 2,200) 31 miles away. In Carlsbad (pop. 29,000, 39 miles away), Kermit (pop. 6,400, 39 miles away), La Huerta (pop. 1,200, 40 miles away), and Eunice (pop. 3,100, 42 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
