Small magnitude 3.4 quake hits 5 miles southwest of Antioch, California, United States early afternoon The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.4 quake in the United States near Antioch, Contra Costa County, California, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Monday, September 15th, 2025, at 3:00 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 4 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Clayton (pop. 11,900) located 5 miles from the epicenter, Antioch (pop. 110,500) 5 miles away, Pittsburg (pop. 69,400) 6 miles away, Brentwood (pop. 59,000) 8 miles away, and Oakley (pop. 39,800) 8 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Concord (pop. 128,700) located 10 miles from the epicenter, Walnut Creek (pop. 68,900) 12 miles away, and San Ramon (pop. 76,100) 13 miles away. In San Francisco (pop. 864,800, 33 miles away), and Sacramento (pop. 490,700, 48 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
