Small tremor of magnitude 3.7 just reported 30 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii, United States A very shallow magnitude 3.7 earthquake was reported around noon near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday, September 25th, 2025, at 12:21 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 4.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.8. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Volcano (pop. 2,600) located 9 miles from the epicenter, and Fern Forest (pop. 1,200) 12 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Eden Roc (pop. 1,400) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Mountain View (pop. 3,900) 18 miles away, Hawaiian Acres (pop. 2,700) 19 miles away, Ainaloa (pop. 3,000) 21 miles away, Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400) 25 miles away, Hawaiian Beaches (pop. 4,300) 25 miles away, and Hilo (pop. 43,300) 30 miles away.
