Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.8 just reported 54 km north of Kon Tum, Vietnam A shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported early morning near Kon Tum, Kon Tum City, Vietnam. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Monday, October 6th, 2025, at 1:28 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Thailand's Earthquake Observation Division (TMD) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.8, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.9, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Kon Tum (pop. 172,700) located 54 km from the epicenter, Tra My (pop. 6,600) 59 km away, Quang Ngai (pop. 33,000) 86 km away, Tam Ky (pop. 165,200) 94 km away, Pleiku (pop. 114,200) 95 km away, and An Ha (pop. 8,200) 95 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
