Small 3.7 quake hits near Ambato, Tungurahua, Ecuador A shallow magnitude 3.7 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Ambato, Tungurahua, Ecuador. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Saturday, December 6th, 2025, at 5:54 pm local time at a shallow depth of 20. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.9. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Pelileo (pop. 16,600) located 2 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ambato (pop. 387,300) located 13 km from the epicenter, Banos (pop. 9,500) 14 km away, Pillaro (pop. 7,500) 18 km away, San Miguel (pop. 10,800) 32 km away, Guano (pop. 12,700) 33 km away, and Pujili (pop. 16,200) 45 km away. In Machachi (pop. 25,700, 91 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
