Moderate 4.9 quake hits near Balikesir, Turkey An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred only 12 minutes ago 62 km southeast of Balikesir, Turkey, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 7. km beneath the epicenter near Balikesir, Turkey, in the morning on Thursday, December 11th, 2025, at 10:06 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey, which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 4.9, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.9, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.8, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 5.1, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.7, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.8, and The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Sindirgi (pop. 10,900) located 13 km from the epicenter, Bigadic (pop. 15,200) 27 km away, and Demirci (pop. 21,400) 34 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Dursunbey (pop. 17,500) located 51 km from the epicenter, Akhisar (pop. 84,700) 51 km away, Soma (pop. 65,900) 61 km away, Balikesir (pop. 238,200) 62 km away, and Salihli (pop. 88,900) 81 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
