Magnitude 3.7 earthquake strikes near Bishop, Inyo County, California, USA An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred in the morning on Wednesday, January 7th, 2026, at 7:44 am local time near Bishop, Inyo County, California, USA, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 6.3 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Big Pine (pop. 1,800) located 23 miles from the epicenter, Bishop (pop. 3,800) 26 miles away, Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek (pop. 2,600) 27 miles away, and West Bishop (pop. 2,600) 29 miles away. In Lone Pine (pop. 2,000, 51 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
