Moderate magnitude 4.8 earthquake 64 km southwest of Ahvāz, Iran A magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Ahvāz, Khuzestan, Iran, was reported only 21 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Sunday, January 11th, 2026, at 8:02 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.8, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.7, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.8. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Jongiyeh (pop. 4,200) located 55 km from the epicenter, Kut-e 'Abdollah (pop. 56,300) 57 km away, Susangerd (pop. 41,400) 61 km away, Ahvāz (pop. 841,100) 64 km away, Khorramshahr (pop. 330,600) 65 km away, Shadegan (pop. 41,700) 68 km away, Sheyban (pop. 36,400) 78 km away, and Ābādān (pop. 370,200) 78 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
