Webmaster Launch Director Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 678,977 Los Angeles, USA	Significant magnitude 5.4 earthquake 82 km north of Luwuk, Indonesia A magnitude 5.4 earthquake near Luwuk, Banggai Regency, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia, was reported only 6 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 86.10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Thursday, January 22nd, 2026, at 6:44 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Luwuk (pop. 47,800) located 82 km from the epicenter, and Gorontalo (pop. 198,500) 95 km away.
