Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.5 just reported 19 km northeast of Sofifi, Indonesia Just 5 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Sofifi, Kota Tidore Kepulauan, North Maluku, Indonesia. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Sunday, January 25th, 2026, at 8:42 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 9. km below the surface. The event was filed by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the first seismological agency to report it. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Sofifi (pop. 36,200) located 19 km from the epicenter, and Ternate (pop. 204,900) 32 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Maba (pop. 12,600) located 73 km from the epicenter, Tobelo (pop. 34,200) 102 km away, and Galela (pop. 8,800) 106 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
