Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.1 just reported 18 km southwest of Goalpara, India

A shallow magnitude 4.1 earthquake was reported in the evening near Goalpara, Goālpāra District, Assam, India.
According to India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake hit on Saturday, January 24th, 2026, at 9:38 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gobindapur (pop. 11,900) located 15 km from the epicenter, Goalpara (pop. 53,400) 18 km away, Lakhipur (pop. 15,600) 22 km away, Chapar (pop. 20,300) 26 km away, and Bilasipara (pop. 37,700) 35 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bongaigaon (pop. 67,300) located 48 km from the epicenter.
