Small magnitude 3.8 quake hits 45 km southwest of Ioannina, Greece in the evening

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake near Ioannina, Epirus, Greece, was reported only 14 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 6.10 km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Thursday, January 29th, 2026, at 9:40 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 3.7, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.8, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 3.6, and The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 3.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gkrika (pop. 260) located 6 km from the epicenter, Parapotamos (pop. 1,100) 7 km away, Graikochori (pop. 1,300) 8 km away, Igoumenitsa (pop. 9,500) 9 km away, Filiates (pop. 2,100) 12 km away, and Paramythia (pop. 2,600) 13 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ioannina (pop. 65,600) located 45 km from the epicenter, Arta (pop. 21,900) 65 km away, and Preveza (pop. 17,300) 69 km away.
