Moderate magnitude 4.5 earthquake 79 km northwest of Palermo, Italy A moderately shallow magnitude 4.5 earthquake was reported early morning near Palermo, Province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026, at 2:17 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 33.20 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. A second report was later issued by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which listed it as a magnitude 3.2 earthquake. Weak shaking might have been felt in San Vito Lo Capo (pop. 2,700) located 44 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Casa Santa (pop. 23,900) located 61 km from the epicenter, Trapani (pop. 67,500) 61 km away, Carini (pop. 35,100) 66 km away, Partinico (pop. 28,700) 70 km away, Partinico (pop. 28,700) 70 km away, Alcamo (pop. 44,400) 70 km away, Monreale (pop. 22,000) 77 km away, and Palermo (pop. 648,300) 79 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
