Significant magnitude 6.0 quake hits 150 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Russia early morning

Just 12 minutes ago, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Kamchatka, Russia. The tremor was recorded early morning on Monday, March 9th, 2026, at 4:08 am local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 49. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 6.0 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.9, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Vilyuchinsk (pop. 25,200) located 140 km from the epicenter, Paratunka (pop. 1,800) 147 km away, and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy (pop. 181,200) 150 km away.
