Small magnitude 3.1 earthquake 3 km northeast of Dharamsala, India An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred early afternoon on Wednesday, May 6th, 2026, at 2:23 pm local time near Dharamsala, Kāngra District, Himachal Pradesh, India, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 7.30 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Dharamsala (pop. 30,800) located 3 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Yol Cantonment (pop. 12,000) located 9 km from the epicenter, Yol (pop. 11,300) 16 km away, Nagrota Bagwan (pop. 5,900) 16 km away, and Kangra (pop. 9,500) 19 km away. In Chamba (pop. 21,500, 39 km away), and Mamun (pop. 32,700, 59 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
