Magnitude 3.9 earthquake strikes near Puntarenas, Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica A magnitude 3.9 earthquake near Puntarenas, Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica, was reported only 29 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 3. km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Wednesday, May 13th, 2026, at 10:39 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Jaco (pop. 4,100) located 7 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tejar (pop. 22,400) located 47 km from the epicenter, San Rafael Abajo (pop. 27,400) 47 km away, Esparza (pop. 15,600) 49 km away, Chacarita (pop. 26,400) 51 km away, Puntarenas (pop. 35,700) 53 km away, Aserri (pop. 25,900) 66 km away, San Miguel (pop. 28,800) 70 km away, San Jose (pop. 335,000) 71 km away, and San Francisco (pop. 55,900) 72 km away.
