Significant 6.0 quake hits near China, Ōshima-gun, Kagoshima-ken, Japan An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred only 8 minutes ago 7 km northwest of China, Japan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near China, Ōshima-gun, Kagoshima-ken, Japan, in the morning on Wednesday, May 20th, 2026, at 11:46 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 6.0 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure. Towns or cities where the quake likely caused strong ground shaking include Moderate shaking probably occurred in Wadomari (pop. 6,900) located 11 km from the epicenter, and Chabana (pop. 5,100) 39 km away. In Isen (pop. 6,600) located 51 km from the epicenter, Amagi (pop. 6,400) 60 km away, Tokuwase (pop. 10,100) 64 km away, Nago (pop. 63,600) 102 km away, and Uruma (pop. 125,300) 131 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
