The quake hit at a shallow depth of 11. km beneath the epicenter near Mataram, Kota Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, early morning on Friday, May 29th, 2026, at 4:03 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.7. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Senggigi (pop. 5,000) located 6 km from the epicenter, and Mataram (pop. 429,700) 7 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lembar (pop. 10,000) located 22 km from the epicenter, Praya (pop. 35,200) 29 km away, Selong (pop. 92,500) 51 km away, Karangasem (pop. 31,900) 52 km away, Amlapura (pop. 31,900) 52 km away, and Amlapura (pop. 31,900) 53 km away.
