Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.4 just reported 35 km north of Ometepec, Mexico Just 8 minutes ago, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Ometepec, Ometepec Municipality, Estado de Guerrero, Mexico. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Friday, June 5th, 2026, at 2:55 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 32. km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4 as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Ometepec (pop. 24,100) located 35 km from the epicenter, and Putla Villa de Guerrero (pop. 10,900) 50 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Tlapa de Comonfort (pop. 47,000) located 63 km from the epicenter, Ayutla de los Libres (pop. 15,400) 74 km away, Heroica Ciudad de Tlaxiaco (pop. 17,500) 82 km away, Pinotepa Nacional (pop. 29,600) 83 km away, Chilpancingo (pop. 187,300) 132 km away, and Chilpancingo (pop. 187,300) 132 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
