Magnitude 5.3 earthquake strikes near Ovalle, Provincia de Limarí, Region de Coquimbo, Chile An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 5 minutes ago 11 km southwest of Ovalle, Chile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 45. km beneath the epicenter near Ovalle, Provincia de Limarí, Region de Coquimbo, Chile, in the morning on Saturday, June 13th, 2026, at 8:04 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Ovalle (pop. 77,100) located 11 km from the epicenter, Punitaqui (pop. 10,400) 16 km away, and Monte Patria (pop. 13,900) 27 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Combarbala (pop. 13,600) located 59 km from the epicenter, Coquimbo (pop. 161,300) 83 km away, La Serena (pop. 154,500) 87 km away, La Serena (pop. 154,500) 87 km away, and Vicuna (pop. 27,800) 89 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
