Small magnitude 3.4 quake hits 37 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii, United States in the evening A moderately shallow magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported in the evening near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday, July 9th, 2026, at 8:17 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 19 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pāhala (pop. 1,400) located 8 miles from the epicenter, Volcano (pop. 2,600) 15 miles away, and Fern Forest (pop. 1,200) 21 miles away. In Mountain View (pop. 3,900, 26 miles away), Hawaiian Acres (pop. 2,700, 28 miles away), Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400, 29 miles away), Ainaloa (pop. 3,000, 31 miles away), Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400, 35 miles away), and Hilo (pop. 43,300, 37 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
