The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 197. km beneath the epicenter near San Antonio de los Cobres, Los Andes Department, Salta Province, Argentina, in the afternoon on Friday, July 24th, 2026, at 4:38 pm local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms.
