Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.4 earthquake 51 km northwest of San Antonio de los Cobres, Argentina Argentina was shaken near San Antonio de los Cobres, Los Andes Department, Salta Province, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 only 6 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 197. km beneath the epicenter near San Antonio de los Cobres, Los Andes Department, Salta Province, Argentina, in the afternoon on Friday, July 24th, 2026, at 4:38 pm local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile, which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.4, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.4. Weak shaking might have been felt in San Antonio de los Cobres (pop. 4,000) located 51 km from the epicenter, Susques (pop. 1,100) 62 km away, and Santa Rosa de Tastil (pop. 2,000) 96 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
