Small 2.9 quake hits near Rennes, Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 occurred after midnight on Wednesday, August 5th, 2026, at 12:53 am local time near Rennes, Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France, as reported by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Chateaubourg (pop. 5,400) located 2 km from the epicenter, Servon-sur-Vilaine (pop. 3,300) 4 km away, La Bouexiere (pop. 4,000) 6 km away, and Acigne (pop. 5,700) 9 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Cesson-Sevigne (pop. 16,200) located 14 km from the epicenter, Vitre (pop. 17,300) 15 km away, and Rennes (pop. 227,800) 20 km away. In Fougeres (pop. 23,700, 29 km away), and Laval (pop. 50,500, 48 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
