Small magnitude 3.0 earthquake 16 km northwest of Miskolc, Hungary The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 3.0 quake in Hungary near Miskolc, Borsod-Abauj Zemplen county, only 5 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Sunday, August 9th, 2026, at 5:13 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Alacska (pop. 880) located 3 km from the epicenter, Kazincbarcika (pop. 32,400) 6 km away, Sajoszentpeter (pop. 11,700) 7 km away, and Edeleny (pop. 11,000) 14 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Miskolc (pop. 154,500) located 16 km from the epicenter, and Ozd (pop. 38,500) 24 km away. In Mezokovesd (pop. 17,700, 43 km away), Tiszaujvaros (pop. 17,300, 45 km away), and Paradsasvar (pop. 76,000, 57 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
