Moderate 4.2 quake hits near Gaziantep, Turkey The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in Turkey near Gaziantep, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Sunday, August 9th, 2026, at 3:42 am local time at a very shallow depth of 7.40 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 4.6, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.2, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Hisarkoey (pop. 1000) located 2 km from the epicenter, Sakcagoez (pop. 3,900) 5 km away, Nurdagi (pop. 12,800) 15 km away, Gaziantep (pop. 2,130,400) 43 km away, Pazarcik (pop. 23,900) 53 km away, Erzin (pop. 26,300) 66 km away, Doertyol (pop. 56,500) 68 km away, and Kadirli (pop. 70,200) 76 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nizip (pop. 82,300) located 80 km from the epicenter.
