DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 500 AM HST (1500 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Lowell was
located near latitude 12.8 North, longitude 145.7 West. Lowell is
moving toward the west near 14 mph (22 km/h) and this motion is
expected to continue during the next two to three days. Thereafter, 
a gradual turn toward the west-northwest is forecast.
 
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 mph (100 km/h) 
with higher gusts.  Rapid intensification is forecast over the next 
48 hours, and Lowell is expected to become a major hurricane by 
Wednesday.
 
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km)
from the center.
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 995 mb (29.39 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND
----------------------
SURF:  Swells generated by Lowell are likely to affect portions of
the Hawaiian Islands beginning around mid-week.  These swells are
likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
