Magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes near Argostoli, Kefallonia, Ionian Islands, Greece

A shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported in the evening near Argostoli, Kefallonia, Ionian Islands, Greece.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake struck on Saturday, September 12th, 2026, at 8:51 pm local time and at a shallow depth of 14. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.
A second report was later issued by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), which also listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA), which recorded a magnitude of 4.8; the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which recorded a magnitude of 4.9; and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab (AUTH), which recorded a magnitude of 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as a light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lixouri (pop. 3,800), located 35 km from the epicenter; Argostoli (pop. 9,800), 38 km away; Faraklata (pop. 1,100), 42 km away; Valsamata (pop. 1000), 46 km away; Zakynthos (pop. 11,500), 75 km away; and Amaliada (pop. 16,800), 113 km away.
