Small magnitude 2.9 earthquake strikes near Granada, Andalusia, Spain A magnitude 2.9 earthquake near Granada, Andalusia, Spain, was reported just 10 minutes ago by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), considered the main national agency monitoring seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5. km beneath the epicenter around noon on Friday, September 18th, 2026, at 1:55 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 2.5 earthquake. A third agency, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as a light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Alhendin (pop. 4,900), located 2 km from the epicenter; Las Gabias (pop. 16,400), 5 km away; Armilla (pop. 21,400), 6 km away; Zubia (pop. 19,000), 7 km away; Granada (pop. 233,500), 11 km away; Santafe (pop. 15,400), 12 km away; and Maracena (pop. 20,800), 13 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Albolote (pop. 17,100), located 15 km from the epicenter.
