Magnitude 4.1 earthquake strikes near Irakleion, Crete, Greece A magnitude 4.1 earthquake near Irakleion, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, was reported only 8 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies monitoring seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5. km beneath the epicenter early on Sunday morning, October 4th, 2026, at 3:48 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network RaspberryShake, which also listed the quake at magnitude 4.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.1; the Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.2; the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 4.0; and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Kamares (pop. 330), located 5 km from the epicenter; Tympaki (pop. 5,300), 13 km away; Anogeia (pop. 2,500), 15 km away; Moires (pop. 6,400), 18 km away; Gazi (pop. 12,600), 30 km away; Rethymno (pop. 32,500), 33 km away; Irakleion (pop. 137,200), 36 km away; and Nea Alikarnassos (pop. 12,900), 38 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chania (pop. 53,900), located 77 km from the epicenter.
Earthquake data: Date & time: Oct 4, 2026 03:48 am (GMT +3) local time (4 Oct 2026 00:48 GMT)Magnitude: 4.1 Hypocenter depth: 5.00 km Epicenter coordinates: 35.19°N / 24.78°E ( Heraklion Regional Unit, Crete, Greece) Primary data source: EMSChttps://www.volcanodiscovery.com/earthquakes/news/370893/Magnitude-41-earthquake-strikes-near-Irakleion-Crete-Greece.html
