Significant magnitude 6.0 earthquake reported 91 km southeast of Santiago, Panama A magnitude 6.0 earthquake near Santiago, Santiago District, Provincia de Veraguas, Panama, was reported only 7 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies monitoring seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter around noon on Friday, October 9th, 2026, at 1:37 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Macaracas (pop. 2,200), located 32 km from the epicenter; Las Tablas (pop. 8,900), 40 km away; Guarare (pop. 3,200), 45 km away; Los Santos (pop. 6,000), 53 km away; San Juan Bautista (pop. 11,800), 56 km away; and Monagrillo (pop. 10,800), 58 km away. Weak shaking might have been felt in Santiago (pop. 45,400), located 91 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if they change and follow up if other significant news about the quake becomes available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
