Light earthquake of magnitude 4.2 reported 18 km northeast of DhÄrchula, IndiaJust 39 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Dhārchula, Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, India. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Tuesday 12 January 2021 at 9:03 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Dārchulā (pop. 18,300) located 16 km from the epicenter, and Dhārchula (pop. 7,300) 18 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pithorāgarh (pop. 47,600) located 58 km from the epicenter, Burang (pop. 5,000) 64 km away, Dadeldhurā (pop. 19,000) 67 km away, and Dipayal (pop. 23,400) 74 km away.
