TYPHOON SONGDA
Songda formed as a tropical depression on May 20, 2011. It strengthened into a tropical storm the same day, and became a typhoon four days later.

ERUPTION OF GRíMSVOTN VOLCANO, ICELAND
On May 21, 2011 Iceland's Grímsvotn Volcano erupted, sending an ash plume 20 kilometers (12 miles) high. Ash fell on much of Iceland, with some areas pitch black at midday on May 22. By May 24, ash had spread over the North Sea.
