Magnitude 5.2 earthquake strikes near Loja, Cantón Loja, Provincia de Loja, Ecuador 5.2 quake 18 Feb 5:51 am (GMT -5) An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred early morning on Thursday 18 February 2021 at 5:51 am local time near Loja, Cantón Loja, Provincia de Loja, Ecuador, as reported by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 89 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Zamora (pop. 15,300) located 13 km from the epicenter, Loja (pop. 117,800) 16 km away, Catamayo (pop. 18,600) 33 km away, Yantzaza (pop. 10,000) 39 km away, Cariamanga (pop. 16,900) 65 km away, Piñas (pop. 17,000) 78 km away, and Cuenca (pop. 277,000) 124 km away.
