Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake 48 km north of Tauranga, New Zealand 4.6 quake 7 Mar 8:05 pm (GMT +13) A very deep magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported in the evening near Tauranga, Tauranga City, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Sunday 7 March 2021 at 8:05 pm local time at a great depth of 484 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Waihi Beach (pop. 2,000, 32 km away), Whangamata (pop. 4,300, 35 km away), Tauranga (pop. 110,300, 48 km away), Rotorua (pop. 65,900, 98 km away), Rotorua (pop. 65,900, 98 km away), Cambridge (pop. 15,200, 99 km away), and Hamilton (pop. 152,600, 103 km away), the quake was probably not felt. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
