OP Webmaster Launch Director Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 381,904 Los Angeles, USA	Small magnitude 3.4 earthquake 6 miles south of Muswellbrook, Australia 3.4 quake 30 Mar 4:42 am (GMT +11) A very shallow magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported early morning near Muswellbrook, New South Wales, Australia. According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake hit on Tuesday 30 March 2021 at 4:42 am local time at a very shallow depth of 2.9 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Muswellbrook (pop. 12,100) located 6 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Denman (pop. 1,800) located 11 miles from the epicenter, Aberdeen (pop. 2,000) 13 miles away, and Singleton (pop. 5,100) 23 miles away. In Cessnock (pop. 15,100, 44 miles away), and Maitland (pop. 67,100, 48 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
