An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred after midnight on Friday 7 May 2021 at 12:15 am local time near Shizunai-furukawachō, Hidaka-gun, Hokkaido, Japan, as reported by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 81 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
