Moderate 4.9 quake hits near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan 4.9 quake 13 km northwest of Hualien City, Taiwan, 23 Jun 1:40 pm (GMT +8) A shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported around noon near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Wednesday 23 June 2021 at 1:40 pm local time at a shallow depth of 21 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Hualien City (pop. 350,500) located 13 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Puli (pop. 86,400) located 56 km from the epicenter, Yilan (pop. 94,200) 81 km away, Taichung (pop. 1,040,700) 84 km away, Zhongxing New Village (pop. 25,500) 85 km away, Nantou City (pop. 105,700) 87 km away, Yuanlin (pop. 124,700) 96 km away, and Hsinchu (pop. 404,100) 99 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Taipei (pop. 7,871,900) located 110 km from the epicenter.
