Small tremor of magnitude 3.4 just reported 53 miles south of Carlsbad, Texas, United States3.4 quake 8 Jul 8:09 pm (GMT -5) An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred in the evening on Thursday 8 July 2021 at 8:09 pm local time near Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 4.5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake. According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Malaga (pop. 150, 43 miles away), Loving (pop. 1,400, 46 miles away), and Carlsbad (pop. 29,000, 53 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
